Sex Crime by Aid Workers Under-Reported

The extent of sexual abuse by aid workers and peacekeepers is being under-estimated because mechanisms to encourage victims to speak out against their attackers and to protect them are poorly developed, the British non-governmental organisation Save the Children warns in a report released today.

High prevalence of cervical cancer associated HPV strains in HIV-positive women

According to a study published in the online edition of Sexual Transmitted Infections, almost 50% of HIV-positive women in Uganda are infected with strains of Human Papilloma Virus (HPV) that are associated with a risk of cervical cancer. The study also showed that women who reported symptoms of tuberculosis, shingles or oral thrush, had an increased risk of infection with potentially cancer-causing HPV strains.

South Africa's insufficient public sector anti-HIV treatment has been highlighted again with the release of expert guidelines on antiretroviral therapy in the region. The guidelines recommend starting patients on antiretrovirals (ARVs) earlier than government prescribes and HIV-positive pregnant women regardless of health status.
