ICT camp @ Women’s Net
Women’sNet is hosting the second Oxfam Canada funded Women’s Rights Advancement Programme in Auckalnd Park, Johannesburg. The workshop will run from Monday, 03 October 2011 until Thursday 06 October 2011. Partners who have joined us for the ICT camp are Thohoyandou Victim Empowerment Programme (TVEP) Khanya College, NISSA, and Remmoho. The workshop is aimed at creating, strengthening and building a community of feminists using ICTs for their project and programmes.
The first day of the workshop has seen participants discuss online and offline tools that they have used on their previous campaigns, what issues they discussed, which tools worked best, which didn’t and many more.
On the second day, participants started off by reflecting on the first day of the workshop and said they felt excited and energised as they look forward to playing with technology and explore. It has been an amazing two days so far. One of the participants was excited that for the first time in her life, she touched and worked on a laptop and thanked Women’s Net for the opportunity and hoped this will be the beginning of new opportunities for her. There are still two more days to go and the feedback has been amazing

From the 18th to the 20th July 2011, the first Southern African Regional Feminist Tech Exchange (FTX) was hosted in Johannesburg, South Africa, by JASS (Just Associates) Southern Africa and Women’s Net. The Feminist Tech Exchange, organized under the Building Women’s Collective Power partnership, brought nine women’s rights activists from Malawi, Zambia and Zimbabwe together to share and build knowledge and skills on communication and ICTs from a feminist perspective. The exchange was convened as a way to strengthen women’s collective organizing power through the use of ICTs. It created a platform for women activists to explore how different forms of technology can support, strengthen or disrupt power and allowed for a greater understanding of emerging technologies, their potential and impact on the rights and lives of women.
