New Anti-trafficking Campaign Launched

14 Jul 2009

Local non governmental organisations and the South African Police Service are to work together in a 2010 anti-human trafficking drive.

Launched on Friday in Hillbrow, the Red Light 2010 campaign seeks to increase awareness about human trafficking and reduce women and children's vulnerability to trafficking for sexual exploitation.

The campaign is a joint initiative of the Women and Law in Southern Africa, the Southern Africa Network against Trafficking and Abuse of Children (SANTAC) and Johannesburg Child Welfare.

According to The Times, measures to be adopted by SAPS include the use of new mapping technology in identifying brothels and other high risk trafficking areas.

The NGOs involved in the campaign believe that education will be a very important part of the campaign.

"There is no understanding of what human trafficking is, hence it is not yet seen as a crime. Yet human trafficking is a growing trend in South Africa," Child Welfare's assistant director, Carol Bews, told The Times.

"During 2010, there will be a lot of visitors coming to our country. With so many people in South Africa, we will see women and children being trafficked. This campaign intends to give people knowledge about how trafficking happens," she added.

According to a recently released report on human trafficking South Africa is likely to see an increase in this kind of activity during the 2010 Fifa World Cup.
