Is Women Forward the New Women’s Political Movement?
21 Apr 2009
Why Women forward?
The reason that this political party was formed was because it had become very obvious that women’s issues were not being addressed and that since the President of Women Forward Ms Nana Ngobese-Nxumalo worked within government it was evident that as much as there all these great policies in place for women empowerment the resources were not going where they should go and women were still being marginalized.
What are your policies on women empowerment?
As women Forward we want to make sure that every one becomes more empowered one way or another by empowering the people that deal with family issues as well a community issues on a daily basis. Women have to be empowered in all different facets of their lives in a holistic manner so that they can transfer it to their communities.
We believe that in order to make prosperous communities and a great future, women should learn to empower themselves and learn to stand up for themselves to better their lives and their families. We have projects such as Wonderbags and Worm-farms to ensure that the culture of cooperatives carries on and to find means and ways to make a living by using their natural environments
We will be launching a Campus crusade called WF Vibes in campuses where by will be opening up forums for women to speak about issues and for them to have a voice within societies.
We currently have a project called Cool Girls where by young girls work within their community projects to serve their community as well as upgrade it by using skills that they learn from their school education.
How will you make the legal system work for women?
The legal system is flawed in a way that although there are laws in place that protect women abuse those laws are not full proof. For Example the law state that when one is being abused they can get a restraining order form the abuser that allows them certain meters way from that person. Most of the abuse that takes place is within marriage and therefore the law does not protect women in a sense that if a restraining order has been put on that man for violating them, the women can be the one that is forced to find alternative accommodation and be chased out of her home.
Women Forward will take a look into those technicalities and seek to make sure that the legal system protects them all the way and not in half measures.
Women Forward believes that the law should be tougher on criminals that do these heinous crimes but there is also a responsibility in the community not to harbor criminals. The community should have open forums whereby issues such as violence on women and children are talked about and that as a community stand together the fight the injustice.
The mechanisms of the state cannot work alone. We strongly encourage the community to take part in the well being of the community.
Women basically have the same issues despite the geographically divisions, now when we look at rural women the only thing that people worry about is the fact that they are illiterate when as a matter effect they actually are doing so much for their communities development wise .WF sees the need to empower these women, we say if you cant teach them to read and write English use method that they understand. For example look at the women of Bangladesh are illiterate but they have managed to make lots of money because they were using method that worked for them which is the key, let the people design their own modules of development and then change will come. On our Candidate list we have a member who can’t speak English but she understands community work which is what we need to make this country to prosper.
Your plans on improving Girl's education?
Our education system still seems to fail girls, they still drop out of school, they walk long distances to access education, and how does your party propose to deal with this.
The government has done all it could when it comes to the education system in this country but its not enough. We have started a programme which is to empower girls in schools we have adopted a number of schools what we do is the top girl student at the end of the year we pay deposit for their tuition to their chosen higher education and that alone is still not enough. Our education system needs to go back to the roots of counting using sticks because the OBE has failed dismally. We believe in using the old methods of teaching as well as he new methods in order o make them work. Through our community outreach programmes people believe that he reason why there is high level of pregnancy is because children are not occupied enough in school and hey do no show interest because they do not understand he importance and what they will gain.
We cannot stress enough about empowerment, if we can find ways to encourage girls and boys o go to school and show them the benefits of doing do hen the battle has been half won
Is South Africa is ready for a women President?
This country has been through many things most of which a lot of people thought we were not ready for, so women for president is not a major thing I mean we will not change the national flag to be pink, the only difference is that we will bring peace and harmony along.
Is Women Forward a Feminist Party?
The answer is a glaring No. Women Forward accepts all a memberships regardless of sex, race or creed. It is a arty that has boldly stated that in whatever that is being done in terms of policy and governance, Women get first preference because e they have been marginalized for far too long.
We are not saying men should step aside, its our time now . As Women Forward we are saying that there is enough space for transformation to encompass everyone
Why vote for Women Forward
