THE International Volunteer's Day which was commemorated on Friday as part of the 16 days of activism of violence against women.

The celebration was held at the Honiara Central Market. Coordinator of the International Volunteer's day programme, Kim Abbey who is a volunteer herself said this shows how volunteers involved themselves in the fight against violence of women and children.

Kim herself is a volunteer under the Australian Volunteer International works with the church of Melanesia as an administration advisor-capacity builder. She said the IVD marks the day and at the same time are working in the 16 days of activism.

The Family support Centre, Christian Care Centre, JICA, AVI and VIDA came together to show case their work to the public as part of the International Volunteer Day and 16 days of activism against violence against women.

"It is like an open day where people can ask questions of the work of volunteers and the NGO's supporting violence against women of what their services provided."

"We also made two canvas boards where people can leave their mark on which is part of the work volunteers did as a campaign to support people violence has left a mark on them." Many people came and leave their mark yesterday which shows that there are many who support the violence against women and children",Ms Abbey said.

The canvas will then be given to the sisters at the Christians Care Centre where it will be kept with the sisters to show that they supports all who are victimized in the violence against women and children.

International Volunteer's Day was celebrated world wide every year on December 5, a day set aside by the United Nations to recognized volunteers and their work. .  with pix
