The United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), welcomed last week's call by the United Nations Security Council for an immediate halt of all acts of sexual violence against women in conflict situations. The Fund described it as a historical achievement that would go a long way in protecting the dignity of women and girls who are often subjected to violence as a tactic of war.

Climate change policies have so far ignored the likely human rights impacts, according to a new report published by the International Council on Human Rights Policy. The report argues that human rights principles can guide climate change policy by focusing on individual suffering and exposure to risk.

According to a study published in the online edition of Sexual Transmitted Infections, almost 50% of HIV-positive women in Uganda are infected with strains of Human Papilloma Virus (HPV) that are associated with a risk of cervical cancer. The study also showed that women who reported symptoms of tuberculosis, shingles or oral thrush, had an increased risk of infection with potentially cancer-causing HPV strains.

As part of women's month, a one day workshop on the promotion of the new sexual violence law in the DRC was held on 31 Monday March 2008 in Kinshasa, under the aegis of the International NGO Network for Development (RIOD). The workshop was organised by RIOD and other female NGO networks to make women aware of their rights, so that they can fight the impunity of those who commit acts of sexual violence.

The role in which women can play in politics is still disregarded in most parliaments across the world. This is one of the findings revealed by Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) in the survey conducted on equality in politics. The findings reveal that women occupy fewer seats in parliament than men.

South Africa's insufficient public sector anti-HIV treatment has been highlighted again with the release of expert guidelines on antiretroviral therapy in the region. The guidelines recommend starting patients on antiretrovirals (ARVs) earlier than government prescribes and HIV-positive pregnant women regardless of health status.
