On August 17, 2008 in Johannesburg, South Africa, SADC Heads of State and Government signed the SADC Protocol on Gender and Development. This represents an important step in work towards the empowerment of women, the elimination of discrimination and the achievement of gender equality and equity. This Protocol is a legally binding agreement compelling SADC Member States to hasten efforts towards gender equity in the Region.

Women in developing countries face an increased risk of cervical cancer because they are not regularly screened for the disease. Though women in low-income countries are more likely to be exposed to risk factors like smoking and unsafe sex, just 19 per cent of women in the developing world have been screened - compared to 63 per cent in developed countries.
