Uganda's Ministry of ICT has commenced discussions on a new IT policy for the country. The new national policy is intended to address the shortfalls of the 2003 IT policy, explained Williams Dembe of Precision Innovations Systems, one of the drafters of the document, at a national dialogue on the draft policy.

TAC has issued the following global call for affordable access to HPV vaccines in non-OECD (developing) countries. Copies of the statement will be delivered to representatives of Merck and GlaxoSmithKline, the manufactures and patent-holders of  the Gardasil© and Ceravix© HPV vaccines , respectively, in the near future.

Statistics South Africa released the Mortality and causes of death in South Africa, 2006: Findings from death notification report last week. The statistical release presents data on mortality and causes of death based on all death notification forms received from the Department of Home Affairs for deaths that occurred in 2006.

On 22 October, the Parliamentary Portfolio Committee on Communications will again be deliberating on the Broadcasting Amendment Bill. The ‘Save our SABC' Coalition is sending a letter to the Chair of the Committee, Ismail Vadi to object to certain proposals to amend the Bill suggested by the National Council of Provinces (NCOP).

The war against HIV/AIDS will not be won unless sexual and gender-based violence is reduced, experts are realising. On 18 October, three women embarked on the Women on Waves ship to sail to the high, free seas. The ship was accompanied by three other boats filled with press. The ship is ruled by Dutch law. Under Dutch law, women with unwanted pregnancies can take the abortion pill free of charge and without the permission of a psychiatrist that is required by Spanish law.
