20 November 2008 marks the 10th annual International Transgender Day Of Remembrance, commemorating those who were killed due to anti transgender hatred or prejudice. The event is held in November to honour Rita Hester whose murder on November 28th 1998 inspired the "Remembering our Dead".

The principle of equal pay for women and men was laid down in Article 119 of the Treaty of Rome and expanded in the 1970s with the adoption of specific directives. In 1992, the principle of gender mainstreaming was enshrined in the EC Treaty, stipulating that the principle of equal treatment should not prevent the maintenance or adoption of measures providing for specific advantages in favour of the under-represented sex (Article 141).
