The Population Council: Training Officer

The Population Council is an international, nonprofit, nongovernmental institution that seeks to improve the well-being and reproductive health of current and future generations around the world and to help achieve a humane, equitable, and sustainable balance between people and resources. The Council conducts biomedical, social science, and public health research and helps build research capacities in developing countries.

The Population Council is currently spearheading a new initiative to improve access to comprehensive post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP) for adults and children for sexual assault and occupational PEP for those at risk, systems strengthening to support the delivery of PEP, and the streamlining of sexual assault forensic evidence kit processing. Its approach involves complementing existing efforts by Government departments providing PEP services, to collaborate with other stakeholders in order to leverage our comparative advantages to increase demand and provision quality of services; and systems strengthening to ensure program monitoring and sustainability. This will be accomplished through collaboration with the Departments of Health (DOH), Police (SAPS) and Correctional Services (DCS)).

The Population Council seeks to appoint a Training Officer, based in Johannesburg. 

Job Description: 

 Responsibilities:

  • Play a crucial lead role in the provision of training and ensuring provider competency  in providing  comprehensive post exposure prophylaxis (PEP) care and follow up  for child and adult sexual assault survivors;
  • Provide training as well as increase awareness of Occupational PEP  where there is risk of transmission of HIV and other blood borne infections through occupational exposure;
  • Enhance the capacity of Health workers (of various cadres) to contribute to health system strengthening within the context of PEP provision;
  • Enhance the capacity of Police and DCS staff  to contribute to strengthening PEP service provision;
  • Develop, in collaboration with the PC training team, capacity building materials and tools relevant for strengthening and scaling up the programme;
  • Work closely with relevant institutions to obtain accreditation for training modules;
  • Collaborate with other PC team members, government departments, UN agencies, and other PERPAR partners, NGOs and international professional associations, to harmonize and ensure that necessary tools, processes and systems are in place to support the work of health professions, SAPS  and Correctional Staff to increase PEP provision;
  • Write technical training reports for each training conducted following the PC reporting format  and submit at least 3 days after the training;
  • Coordinate and implement training plans, in collaboration with PC team members;
  • Ensure documentation of all training sessions including evaluation of training in improving provider knowledge;
  • Adapt and strengthen existing tools based on feedback;
  • Other duties as assigned.

Requirements:

  • University degree in health-related discipline (e.g. medicine, nursing and/or midwifery);
  • Ability to travel for up to 50% time;
  • Training in forensic nursing an added advantage.
  • Post graduate training in education, research or public health;

  • Experience in collaborating with DOH, NGOs, health professional associations, academic and research institutions.

Salary: Depending on experience and qualifications.

Duration: Temporary - 3 months.
