Mental Health Counsellor
Hope House requires the services of a Mental Health Counsellor on a full-time basis. This is an18 month contract with appointment from 1st February 2012 or soonest thereafter. The appointee will be based at Retreat Maternity Obstetric Unit. The maternal mental health service is run in collaboration with the Perinatal Mental Health Project, based at the University of Cape Town.
The job will involve provision of therapeutic counselling to emotionally distressed pregnant and postnatal women. This includes:
- provision of individual and group therapy sessions
- follow up of clients and offering ongoing counselling to women who require this support
- making referrals to mental health care specialists / community organizations where appropriate
- provision of health promotion activities
- liaison with project staff, hospital staff and supporting NGOs
Qualifications required:
- Tertiary qualification
- Counselling Skills qualification
- At least 3 years’ experience of therapeutic counselling in the public sector
Applicants should have the following skills and attributes:
- Ability to communicate in English, Afrikaans (isiXhosa would be an added advantage)
- Excellent facilitation, presentation and interpersonal skills
- Good organizational and time management skills
- Excellent administrative and report-writing skills
- Competencies in Microsoft Office computer package
- Ability to work well as member of a team as well as independently
- The successful applicant would need to fit into the ethos of Hope House, which is a Christian Counselling Centre
Additional recommendations:
- Interest in women’s mental health
- Mature women with own children preferred
The before taxes annual remuneration package, including benefits, is R144,000 and will be based on
qualifications and experience.
