Legal Resources Centre: Attorney
The Legal Resources Centre is a human rights organisation in South Africa which uses the law as an instrument of justice for the vulnerable and marginalised, including poor, homeless and landless people and communities who suffer discrimination by reason of race, class, gender, disability or by reason of social, economic, and historical circumstances.
The Legal Resources Centre seeks to employ an admitted attorney, with at least two years’ experience after admission, in its Constitutional Litigation Unit (CLU) in Johannesburg. The CLU is a specialist unit which formulates and executes litigation strategy in cases with a high social impact or which raise important constitutional issues and serves as a referral point for the regional offi ces of the LRC.
The successful candidate will work predominantly on a large-scale test case action in which the LRC acts for a number of ex-miners claiming damages from a large mining company. The case involves a collaboration with a leading London law firm specialising in class action litigation. In addition, the successful applicant will contribute to the general activities of the CLU, including other litigious matters.
