The United Nations International Research and Training Institute for the Advancement of Women (UN-INSTRAW) seeks to employ a LAMP Assistant.
Job Description: 

Supervision:

Direct/general supervision will be provided by the UN-INSTRAW Information Officer.

 

Content and methodology of the supervision: The incumbent will present periodic reports to the supervisor on the activities undertaken. In addition, periodic meetings will be held with the supervisors in order to assess progress and performance.

 

Duties, responsibilities and output expectations:

 

The candidate will support the maintenance and development of UN-INSTRAW's Website. Specific tasks will include:

 

* maintaining the Institute's SQL server functionality;

* maintaining and ensuring consistency of data across multiple databases, including online and institutional contact databases;

* advising on and participating in quality control efforts for all applications;

* developing web applications for various research and training

* managing the Institute's Joomla Content Management System; and

* implementing and maintaining a timely and accurate mechanism for monitoring activity on the Institute's Website, and producing monthly reports.

 

Qualifications and Experience:

 

* Education: University degree or a combination of academic and professional experience in computer Science, or a related field.

* Languages: Fluency in English is essential. Working knowledge of Spanish and/or French would also be an asset.

* Work experience: a minimum of three to five years experience with Web development and open source software, including a thorough working knowledge of the LAMP software bundle (Linux, Apache, MySQL, and PHP), Java, Servlets, JSP and HTML applications.

* Working knowledge of Web development using Adobe Flex and/or ActionScript 2.0+ and AJAX would be highly valued.

* Some experience working with gender and/or development issues in an international context, particularly within the UN System, would be a significant asset.

* Professionalism - Ability to manage processes, maintain accurate records, interpret/analyse a wide variety of data, and present summaries as required, ability to learn quickly, ask questions, and be self-driven to complete assignments.

* Commitment to achieving the goal of gender equality and empowerment of women by ensuring the inclusion of relevant aspects in to every activity, good analytical and problem solving skills, and a dedicated commitment to customer service.

* Planning and Organizing - Demonstrates effective organisational skills and ability to handle work in an efficient and timely manner, overall understanding of basic Object Oriented principals.

* Technological Awareness - see above.

* Teamwork - Good interpersonal skills, ability to work in a multi-cultural, multi-ethnic environment with sensitivity and respect for diversity.

* Communication -strong verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills as well as the ability to communicate appropriately with both technical and program experts.
