Counsellor
The Desmond Tutu HIV Foundation is a registered non-profit organisation focused on the pursuit of excellence in research, treatment and prevention of HIV and related infections in Southern Africa. It is run in association with the Desmond Tutu HIV Centre at the University of Cape Town's Institute of Infectious Disease and Molecular Medicine. The Foundation operates community sites in greater Cape Town's Nyanga and Masiphumelele districts.
The Foundation invites applications from candidates for a fulltime, three-year contract post as a Counsellor at the Masiphumelele Clinic in Masiphumelele.
This position focuses on women's health and microbicides research. Microbicides are vaginal products that could prevent HIV transmission thereby giving women a powerful tool for protecting themselves from HIV infection.
Responsibilities:
- Maintain strict client confidentiality;
- Organise microbicide discussion groups to share information about vaginal microbicides with women;
- Provide important information about specific research studies to potential study participants through informed consent discussion groups;
- Assist in the informed consent process;
- Provide pre- and post-test counselling as well as risk reduction counselling to study participants;
- Provide adherence counselling to study participants;
- Complete research-related paperwork;
- Perform other research procedures or activities as required.
Requirements:
- Interest in women's health and HIV;
- ATTIC VCT counselling course certificate;
- HIV counselling experience;
- Excellent verbal and interpersonal communication skills;
- Organised and ability to plan;
- Ability to work well under pressure and to maintain effectiveness during changing conditions;
- Must be detail orientated and have an interest in research;
- Must be able to work as a member of a team;
- Willingness to work flexible hours.
Salary and Benefits This contract post is renewable subject to funding availability and acceptable work performance.
