Call for Applications: Materials Developer
As part of a national campaign to promote the safe use of digital communication tools, for young people, Women’sNet is commissioning the development of a set of well designed and researched resources for parents, teachers and learners.
Brief: Materials for Awareness Raising on Safe Online Communications
As part of a national campaign to promote the safe use of digital communication tools, for young people, Women’sNet is commissioning the development of a set of well designed and researched resources for parents, teachers and learners.
The materials for the campaign – which will include posters and stickers and CD of open source tools for keeping browsing safe for young people, fact sheets (for computers and cellphones) will be used by young people themselves, educators and parents. Materials will promote the SMS helpline set up to offer assistance and advice. In addition, materials will provide some practical assistance in the form of fact sheets, ideas for lessons and hand-outs.
We are calling on interested materials developers to send an expression of interest to develop the following materials for the campaign:
- Materials for Educators
Purpose: To offer educators a tool kit for integrating lessons on safe communications for online and cellphone tools. The materials must include the following:
- A summary lesson plan outlining participatory exercises that form a learning session of at least 90 minutes
- Worksheets for each exercise highlighting the lesson outcomes, structure, materials needed and methodology used
- Handouts for the exercises (to hand out to learners, complimenting the learning)
- An assessment of the success of the lesson (to be filled out by both the educator and the learners)
- An educators guide for reading before undertaking the learning session (which includes information about the problem, basics about tehnologies, potential risks and interesting facts)
2. Fact Sheets:
The consultant will develop 3 facts sheets (filling 2 sides of an A4 page) – a fact sheet for parents, one for educators and another for children (10 – 18 years old). The fact sheet should be targeted appropriately and should contain information related to:
- Why be concerned?
- Warning signs of abuse/recognising the signs of a dangerous online 'friend'
- Tips for safety (dos and don’ts)
- What do to if you are being harassed or receive online threats or threatening content/what to do if you are an educator or a parent
- Who to contact for help
Materials must be:
- Targeted to the appropriate audience and written in plain English (with references to colloquial language)
- Must be technologically informed, but not focussed
- Information included must be practical and implementable
- All materials will include our contact details and instructions on access information via MXit and SMS
- Content must be gender aware, and transformative of gender stereotypes, inequalities and unfair practices (language used, examples cites and resources should be focussed on empowering women and girls)
