Association for Progressive Communications (APC) seeks to appoint a Communications Manager (location - flexible) to lead its virtual communications team and play a leadership role within the staff of the world’s oldest online progressive network.

 

Job Description: 

S/he reports to the Executive Director and will work on a day-to-day basis with APC management team, staff and members. Most of the work takes place in mailing lists.

The position is full-time on a one-year contract with option to renew if funding is available.

Responsibilities:

# Communications, media and social marketing

  • Editorial chief of a major trilingual ICT4D website (4.5 million pages accessed in 2010) and its twice-monthly newsletter
  • Lead a team of four editors producing original news and feature content in English, French and Spanish, and carrying out regular evaluations of readership. You will also be chief editor of APC’s annual reports
  • Act as international media liaison and sometimes spokesperson with primarily print, web and radio media in English (and potentially Spanish or French)
  • Lead the communications team in the development and monitoring of relationships with the media and production of media releases
  • Keep APC up-to-date in social networking spaces, planning and coordinating strategic approaches to product launches and events
  • Supervise the coordinator of publications and our freelance translation/editing team. APC produces a significant number of paperback and digital books each year in a number of languages and has recently begun offering a translation service for other non-profits
  • Lead the creative process for a number of important social marketing initiatives e.g. development of logos as well as publications
  • Write and edit copy for promotional products such as APC’s brochure and “brand passport” (a booklet that ensures that organisational representatives worldwide remain on message)
  • Supervision of technical support and APC’s communications platforms working with our technical coordinators
  • Improve APC’s internal information management systems, essential to a global online network


# Project management

  • Lead the communications team which is regularly contracted by programmes and projects within APC to create and manage communications strategies.

In recent years those strategies have included:

  • Creation and implementation of communication and media strategy for technology and violence against women initiative in twelve developing countries funded by the Dutch MDG3 Fund. Facilitation of a media partnership with a major progressive news agency
  • Management of the APC Betinho Communications Prize for socially-relevant technology projects and the APC Africa Hafkin Prize over multiple years including promotions as well as coordination of the prize criteria development, application and selection processes including convening and coordination of international juries
  • Management of the book production and promotions for Global Information Society Watch, APC’s annual watchdog report, including supervision of the development of a new website
  • Editorial leadership of series of feature articles to popularise finding of original research carried out by APC.


# Participation in the strategic management team

  • Play an active role in the strategic management team which comprises of the Executive Director and other programme and management system managers.

Requirements:

  • Minimum of five years in communications, media relations and social marketing
  • Experience working completely online including managing projects remotely
  • Skilled at supporting his/her team members to achieve personal and professional goals and creating a collaborative virtual environment
  • A concise, creative, confident communicator, with a strong visual sense and excellent English writing and editing skills
  • Spanish and/or French will be a distinct advantage
  • Experience working in the non-profit sector and ideally dealing with multiple cultures and languages
  • The successful applicant is expected to provide his or her own computer, have easy access to an internet connection, and work during normal office hours. Reimbursement for office supplies and communication costs will be covered by the APC. While much of the communications work will take place online, some travel to meetings, conferences and workshops, is expected.

Starting date: January 2012.

Salary: The remuneration for this position is negotiable depending on skills, qualifications and experience.
