Human Rights

... are Women's Rights

For women to exercise their fundamental human rights they need to be informed of what these rights are. These include international human rights law, constitutional rights and national machinery for gender equality.

In South Africa the following national machinery for women has been established:

The Commission on Gender Equality (CGE) is an autonomous watchdog body to ensure gender equality.

The Office on the Status of Women in the Office of the President is responsible for mainstreaming gender in all government departments.

At the provincial government level gender desks have been established to ensure that gender equality is implemented in all areas of policy.

The Women'sNet Human Rights section includes:

  • Documents: Conventions, reports, government reports, articles…

  • Web Sites and Organisations: Annotated listing of international and national human rights web sites and a link to organisations which are actively participating in the sphere of women and human rights.

  • Bibliographies: Pointers to additional references, both electronic and printed.

  • Interactive spaces: A list of electronic mailing list discussions and e-mail contacts.
