Abstract: 

The PEI Advisory Council on the Status of Women released a policy document today that examines the issue of women's unpaid work and makes recommendations for change.  The release of this policy document reflects the Advisory Council's concern about the continuing inequities that result from the undervaluing of women's unpaid work.

High prevalence of cervical cancer associated HPV strains in HIV-positive women

According to a study published in the online edition of Sexual Transmitted Infections, almost 50% of HIV-positive women in Uganda are infected with strains of Human Papilloma Virus (HPV) that are associated with a risk of cervical cancer. The study also showed that women who reported symptoms of tuberculosis, shingles or oral thrush, had an increased risk of infection with potentially cancer-causing HPV strains.

Although women have historically played an essential role in politics, revolutionary struggles, and public life in Sub-Saharan Africa, since the early 1990s the number of women in African parliaments has increased significantly. This consolidated response discusses factors stimulating the advancement of women in politics in Sub-Saharan Africa. Some of the highlighted factors include gender quotas in politics, national women's movements, and the spillover effect of democratic values throughout the continent.
