Date of event:
9 September 2008
On behalf of the United Nations (UN) Interagency Regional HIV Prevention Working Group for East and Southern Africa, the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) and the Joint UN Programme on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS) are holding a consultative forum on male circumcision with senior media professionals on 8 September 2008 in Johannesburg.

The forum will bring together some 25 senior media professionals who have gate-keeping functions either as bureau chiefs, editorial managers and senior broadcasters to discuss male circumcision rollout in Southern Africa.

The forum is part of UN system effort to support greater public understanding and awareness of male circumcision within HIV/AIDS prevention strategies.

Expected outcomes from the forum are

* Clarity among strategic media professionals and institutions on the evidence around male circumcision and its role on strengthening HIV prevention
* Identification of possible strategies to secure greater public understanding and awareness of male circumcision and its role in HIV prevention
* Agreement around critical actions for UN system organisations in order to strengthen the relationship with regional media institutions on HIV prevention issues

One of the foremost scientists who conducted randomised controlled trials on male circumcision in the region will lead discussions at the forum.
