So Much For A Policy Review!
On Monday I attended the ANC Women’s League
Story Morutoa was my highlight of the day. She sounded very dedicated in her work but was working with people who did not share the same vision. In her speech, she said that speaking about the same issues that were spoken about 14 years ago indicates that “we are not doing what we are supposed to be doing”.
I also like that she spoke about the sexual offense bill. She said that women continue to celebrate Women’s Day yet are victims of the worst forms of violence. In her view, this continues because the sexual offense bill is not unsympathetic enough. She complimented SAPS but said justice was always lacking behind.
She also stressed a need for proposed legislation on trafficking.
The Keynote speaker was Dorothy Ramodibe member of the NEC. In her view,
When asked to raise issues of their concern, I was so disappointed to hear some women complaining about having to pay for tender documents. Others debated about what their municipalities have done about the electricity issue. I really felt that what they were disputing affected both men and women. There were other important issues that could have been debated “emotionally” about such as reducing illiteracy amongst women or ensuring that women have better access to information.
The workshop seemed more like a last minute preparation. There was talk about women but there was no review of any policies. Also, most issues that were raised by the women had nothing to do with the women agenda.
I also did not feel a strong womanhood presence. Even though they had spoken about not undermining each other as women, reading between the lines, I could sense it.
