"Najwa Petersen's aunt caused a big commotion outside Wynberg Magistrate's Court on Thursday, claiming in an emotional outburst that Taliep had driven Najwa to insanity, as he had done with his first wife, Madeega Anders." This was written on the 22nd June 2007.
I've been following up on this story ever since. Today, the 2nd December 2008, I was sad to note that Najwa was found guilty of the murder of her husband Taliep. Whether she killed him or not, God knows, but I just want her to be free. Free to start afresh. Free so she can live happily ever after.
If she killed him, it was because she could not take the abuse anymore. If she killed him, it was because she did not want to die first. But no one is worth any prison term. Let us not kill them like they kill our women and children. Let us walk away while it is still early. And if someone runs to us for help when they are being abused, let us not look away please and think our houses are small. There can never be a small home in South Africa or Africa as a whole.
Walk away oh African woman,
Walk away oh African goddess,
Do not kill for your freedom,
Do not wait to be killed,
Walk away even if without shoes,
Walk away, and all roads will lead to victory.
