My expectations and efforts as a youth
1. Being a youth at my age is first very productive since I still have all the natural abilities to transform my community into a better place to live. Therefore, I hope to be part of the less privileged people in the community especially the youth by mobilizing them to participate into youth productive activities like attainment of vocational training talents, participating in income generating activities (IGAs) and this can be done through the dream I have of minimizing imbalance among all the people in the society despite most being helped but many have a high demand.
2. Achieving millennium development goals is important in my community and perhaps my country and the world at large because of many reasons that might have an impact on people’s lives especially the youth. This may be seen in different aspects of life which include’
a) Many youth will have jobs once different employment opportunities are started for them. This is because they can use their incomes and salaries to acquire basic needs and perhaps even develop other talents through starting other different businesses with such monies.
b) Achieving millennium development goals will bring about better health because many people will have knowledge on how to maintain and remain healthy through proper sanitation and also after being taught on how to prevent and control diseases like malaria and HIV/AIDS among others.
c) Once Millennium Development Goals are achieved, the levels of illiteracy will reduce since many people in our community are illiterate. Starting up developments like building schools and other tertiary institutions will train such citizens different skills. Such schools may provide free education especially to those unable to pay school fees and tuition fees.
d) There will be a reduction in the spread of HIV/AIDS which is so rampant in our community. This may be as a result of enlightening the youths to take precautions against this disease which has claimed lives of many.
e) Its also important to achieve Millennium Development Goals as this has a strong effect on boosting the economy in different ways. Such awareness that boost the economy might be through getting loans and grants from international and national organizations and also though the different infrastructural development in the country and community like the roads, hospitals; In the end, people’s standard of living (SOL) will improve.
3. The much-publicized MDGs are centered on; eradicating extreme poverty and hunger; Achieving Universal Primary Education (UPE); promoting gender equality and empowering women; reducing child mortality rates; improving maternal health; combating HIV/AIDS, Malaria and other major diseases; ensuring environmental sustainability and developing a global partnership for development. . Among the issues cited as stumbling blocks towards the Millennium challenge are; the rampant corruption in government circles that usually lack public accountability, nepotism and regional imbalances in job distribution, restriction of media and press freedoms, the constant harassment of the opposition and members of the civil society sector, among others.
However, such implications are evidential in my community and therefore need immediate attention in order to achieve the following;
Controlling disease especially HIV/AIDS is more important in my community because of many reasons since having this disease is the major root cause to many other problems, once this problem is dealt with, we might yield good results like.
Reduction in death rates since this disease has claimed many lives of the youth who die at a tender age without even making something useful out of their life
Control of HIV/AIDS will redeem the suffering of many innocent live especially the young who remain homeless and without parents to take care of them once their relatives and guardians die. This indeed is one factor that forces many to join the streets and prostitution.
There will be a reduction in the number of orphans as many come to this state due to the loss of their parents.
Marriage breakups might also reduce since such come up as a result of one partner or both not being faithful and in the end infecting the other or reinfecting themselves.
Challenges in my community
Some of the challenges in my community may include; poverty, corruption, HIV/AIDS pandemic, poor sanitation, high population growth rates, illiteracy, high inflation rates, political instability, and inadequate social services and I think Millennium Development Goals are the best opportunity to remedy these challenges because;
a) Starting up schools and institutions as a Millennium Development Goal will help control illiteracy which will help many acquire knowledge on how to make use of the skills and develop their talents.
b) The control of HIV/AIDS will help in a way that, death rates will be reduced, number of orphans and also teach many on how to value their lives.
c) Controlling the high inflation in my community might help many acquire basic needs at fair prices as many people don’t get access to such needs because of their high prices.
d) Solving the problem of high population growth rates will make resources available and match the ideal population because its as a result of many people in my community that pressure on different social amenities like school and hospitals are inadequate.
e) Putting in place the anti-corruption laws and campaigns will also help distribute resources equitably to their rightful owners instead of channeling them to other people as it is done by some leaders in our community
f) Encouraging proper hygiene and sanitation on the other hand in the community would also help reduce on some diseases affecting many people’s lives for example diarrhea, cholera, malaria. This being done as a Millennium Development Goal would improve health and thus making Millennium Development Goals the best opportunity to remedy different challenges in my community
10. a) the government should put up vocational institutions and many other infrastructural developments to train and equip many people with different skills and train them in different skills like carpentry, computer studies, engineering works, among others. In addition to this, free education for all can be started to give chance to those without (less privileged) money to go and acquire education.
b) The government should enlighten the public concerning different issues like the merits of paying government taxes, maintaining good hygiene and sanitation.
c) Inflation should be controlled through lowering prices of different items especially the basic needs like food which are very important in people’s lives.
d) Politicians and the government as a whole should fight corruption because this has proven to be a major cause of under development in any community as it denies people a chance to have what is rightfully theirs. This has also promoted injustice as many politicians accept bribes.
e) the government can also fight HIV/AIDS through teaching people the different ways of how to guard against this pandemic for example advocating for the use of condoms during sex or adopting the ABC formulae (Abstinence, Be faithful, Use a condom).
f) Strict laws against different crimes like corruption, defilement can also be put in place.
g) Different organizations and personalities should also advocate for human rights of which some are violated in our communities and country at large.
h) Employment opportunities should also be put in place to give chance to those seeking for jobs and in the end this will help improve people’s standard of living (SOL).
i) Putting in place infrastructure like hospitals, schools, roads, among others.
j) Government should ask for loans and grants from international and charitable organizations or other superior countries to supplement on what it has planned in order to eradicate poverty as it’s a major hindrance towards achieving the millennium development goals for example recently, Uganda police arrested two youths found slaughtering a dog. Moses Bogere, 36 and Edward Kitumba were charged with injuring an animal. Shall we ever eradicate poverty, one of the key MDGs in less than a decade, when our youths, the most productive age groups resort to eating or trading in dog meat as survival antics? Your guess is as good as mine.
All in all, for every society to register proper flourishing of millennium development goals, every body has to be part of it.
I remain,
