The rudimentary steps of establishing a rural women’s organisation in the Eastern Cape took place this week when representatives from several rural areas and ten women’s organisations met at Rhodes University in Grahamstown.
According to Buyiswa Mhambi of Empilisweni Aids Education Centre, the meeting was a sign of good things to come.
“We have formed a plan for an organisation that will lead the women’s movement in the Eastern Cape,” she said.
The participants also discussed issues of gender-based violence and HIV that plague women living in rural communities in the province.
“Some of the incidents are taken place at home,” said Mhambi.
