About Citizen Journalism Project

Today Women'sNet is working with partner organisations in South Africa to bring together an initial group of activists and organisations to build their capacity to develop media products. The capacity building takes the form of a hands-on technical skills training on using the technology tools to produce media products as well as raising awareness about the concepts and use of citizen media as part of development practice. This blog is a space for this capacity building and sharing idea, opinions and news.

Citizen Journalism Workshop Cape Town - What lovely participants!

Lebo and I were facilitating the citizen journalism workshop this week in Cape Town. The venue for the workshop was the Saartjie Baartman Centre in Manenburg. Although the venue was slightly far from the CBD, we chose it because of the many different female organisations that are based there. Sadly, none of the organisations based there were part of our training but it was still nice interacting with them.

WIPHOLD National Summit

This past Saturday I attended the National Summit of Women hosted by SAWID at the Birchwood Hotel in Boksburg. The aim to "provide a platform for inter-generational dialogue from a woman's point of view".

It was made clear to the women attending the workshop that there would be no talk of the state of the South African politics and that none of them were to wear t-shirts representing any political party. This was a pity because I would have loved to hear what the diverse multitude of "imbokotos" had to say about the elections.

In 2008 South Africa had an 16 Days of Activism Against all women and young woman. The Activism was mostly to be a voice and talk among women and young women, who are being abuse and rape. Since the counrty was reformed into a Democracy country ,voilence has beome a major problem to the society. The humans that are being threat by this voilence are women, because their a weak image to the danger in the society. The Government has decided to support these women, actually all women of the country. The 16 Days of Activism had help women to speak up and let their voice be heard.

DECREASING THE STATS ON TEENAGE PREGNANCY

I think parents should be more open to their children abt reproductive issues since i feel TEENAGE PREGNANCY is a very burning issue amongst teenagers (girls & boys). It might be a mother's responsibility to carry a child for nine months but after the child is born who shud b responsible? Seemingly that young galz have 2 drop out of skul 2 be the parent while the father continues with his studies.

ICT's and me

I some times shudder just weighing thoughts about Information and communication technoogy. This sentiment purely stems from experience in the field. I work with participants and benificiaries that worry more of where the next bread money will come from. Not to mention the magical development-speak words of access and affordability. A point to consider is the roll out of the Universal Services Agency equipping Multi-purpose community Centres with telecentres. All good and well, but if a particular centre do not have access to electricity and a telephone line then i rest my case.

Gay Pride

Gay Pride referes to a world wide movement and philosophy assering that lesbians, gay, bisexual, transgender and intersex LGBTI individuals should be proud of their sexual preference and gender identity. LGBTI pride advocates for equal rights and benefits for LGBTI people. The movement has three main premises: that people should be proud of their sexual preference and gender identity, that sexual diversity is a gift, and that sexual preference and gender identity are inherent and cannot be intentionally altered.

Real Man knows what to do

Man are gaining respect in the community, while young girls are loosing their childhood. At nowadays childrens are not allowed to play in the playing park without an adult supervision. Because they fear for their childs life. Abduction and rape is everyday life, So young girls are the victim of rape by man. Man were suppose to protect their childrens but now that has changed.

Voting ...and women

I am wondering about who to vote for...things are not clear as they used to be......I do feel like things are unraveling and I don't have a sense of being convinced by parties that they are really concerned about the issues and concerns close to my soul and being. While debate is on polygamy, sexual concurrency, being a playa or that Zuma tends to make love and not war....
