This is my first post on Women's Net. I've been signed up for a few months now and have been slowly working my way through the site. I think it is fantastic and I am so glad to have found a feminist community based out of South Africa.
I currently work full time at a public health non-profit organization as part of their sexual and reproductive health hotline. I absolutely adore my job--sexual health is one of my greatest passions. In fact, my desire to learn about sexual health is what ultimately led me to feminism. I am also a volunteer co-organizer for a community-based V-Day campaign and volunteer additionally as a rape care advocate for a local non-profit. Gender-based violence continues to be a cause of mine because 1) so many people I care about have been affected by it and 2) it is so horrifically systemic. Dismantling the system is a daunting task. I am excited to learn, through this site, more about what non-profits and activists are doing in South Africa to dismantle it. A third feminist passion of mine to be mentioned is body image. I think it is more overlooked than either of the aforementioned topics, but really all three topics go hand in hand. I know those are broad interests, but I suppose I just wanted to put out there where I am coming from.
I am thrilled by this site and hope to learn a lot and become a regular poster. I can be shy, but I am hoping to push myself to participate in different dialogues presented by the blogging found on this site. I hope to hear from other members as I begin to blog!
Lastly, I would like to catch up on the politics of the upcoming election. Anyone know some good sites to check in on to keep up-to-date as things progress?
Love-K
