What is GiB Consultation List?

GiB is a consultation process bringing together media practitioners, researchers, activists and academics to share your views on media and gender representations via an e-mail discussion.

The aim of the list is to:

  • understand the gendered content of broadcast legislation and how it can be made more gender aware;
  • explore the social implications legislation has had for men and women in the media and South African society broadly;
  • examine strategic interventions stakeholders can implement to reinforce positive changes in the media.

This is an opportunity for all of us to identify meaningful issues that we would like to see the Department of Communications address in the policy-making process

When is the GIB Consultation happening?

May 14 - August 01, 2001: Facilitated e-mail discussion with a weekly summary of discussions.

What do participants need to do?

1. Prepare for discussions by reviewing background reading material on this site;

2. Introduce yourself to the list by telling us:

  • what you have been involved in; and
  • your interest in gender and media issues, etc.

3. Share your views on:

  • how, in your experience, women have participated in the media and how women can more effectively participate;
  • what factors have hindered women's participation and what opportunities there are for policy to overcome these barriers.

4. Consult with others in your organisation and user communities (if appropriate) and incorporate this feedback into the discussion.

5. Assist with:

  • generating recommendations for strategies to mitigate any obstacles created by the media to further the promotion of women's advancement and concerns;

What will Women'sNet do?

We will:

  • provide information around the latest developments relevant to the consultation;
  • facilitate discussions effectively so that all participants feel comfortable to participate actively in the meeting;
  • ask questions and seek clarity!
  • report to all who participated in the consultation, informing them of the meeting results.
