About the Project

Women'sNet, together with Gender Links and three Consultants working in the gender field, won a tender to Engender Broadcast legislation from the Department of Communication. The project originates with the need to understand how effective relevant existing broadcast legislation and government policy have been in: (1) advancing the position of women in the media sector; and (2) promoting the use of diverse images of women in the different broadcast media. Research will be undertaken in order to engage with these questions.

The overall aims of the research are to:

  • Understand the gendered content of current broadcast legislation;
  • To explore what social implications such legislation has had for men and women in the media and in South African society broadly;
  • To generate recommendations on how broadcast legislation can be made more gender-aware;
  • To generate recommendations for strategies to address any impediments created by the media for the promotion of women's advancement and concerns.
